Welcome to Haywood Grove School. We are pleased to announce that following the flood in school, the reinstatement works are complete and we are now able to use all areas of the building.

Useful Information

School Uniform (available to order from the school office)

We aim for our uniform to be inclusive, with children's well-being  at the centre of our policy.

Our uniform is designed so that all children can access all aspects of our active curriculum.  We aim for our uniform to be:

  • Comfortable
  • Flexible and practical
  • Allowing for free-movement
  • Safety conscious
  • Gender-neutral

Why do we choose to have a uniform policy?

Research evidence connecting discipline and improved academic outcomes to the wearing of uniform is very weak and so this does not have a bearing on our choice.  We elect to have a uniform to:

  • Encourage a sense of belonging to our school community that may have been missing from our children's previous educational experience
  •
  • Prepare our children for the expectations of the next phase of their education

We expect all children to wear uniform and will encourage them to do so.  However,  this will never be a barrier to attendance.

We would like to thank all those who took the time to respond to our survey about our school uniform. This included children, staff, parents/carers and governors.   As a result of the survey responses, we are making some amendments and additions to our policy.  These are hi-lighted in red in the table above and outlined in the policy below.

Dinner Money

Dinner money needs to be paid in advance either weekly, monthly or half termly.  The cost of a school dinner is £3.15 per day.  The school will notify you of any changes in the cost of school meals.  Payment can be made by cash or cheque to the school office.

Free School Meals

Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2

Under the Universal Free School Meals for Infants scheme, your child can get a free school meal if they are in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2.

Additionally if you register for Free School Meals and you qualify, your school could get extra money to help other children.

Children in Year 3 or above

Your child could be entitled to receive a free school meal if you receive any of the following :

  • Income Support
  • Income-Based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Income-Related Employment Support Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit (providing you're not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and you don't get more than £16,190 a year)
  • Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit)
  • Support under part VI of the immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Working tax credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

Severe Weather Conditions and School Closure

The school will always remain open if it is safe to do so.   However, if there is a significant risk of injury or damage due to the weather, (travelling, parking or moving around the school grounds) then there may be occasions when the school needs to close or to shorten its hours so that the risk is manageable.

When there are changes to the school opening hours, or if the school needs to close we will try our best to keep you informed and to let you know as early as we can.

We will do this by:

  • Emailing you via Arbor
  • Leaving an up-to-date message on the school answer phone (01442 250077)

We will also provide information on the following:

The following local radio stations will also announce closures in the morning:

  • BBC Three Counties Radio (103.8fm / 95.5fm or 630mw / 1161 mw)
  • Heart (96.6fm / 96.9fm / 97.6fm) and
  • Verulam Radio (92.6fm)

For children who travel by taxi

If the school has made a decision to remain open it is then necessary for taxi companies to judge whether they are safely able to make the journey, using their knowledge and understanding of local road conditions.  If the taxi runs, but you assess the risk to be unsafe for your child to travel by taxi then you need to inform the taxi of your decision.

Authorised and Unauthorised Absences relating to school closures due to severe weather

If the school is closed or the taxi for your child does not run then your child will not receive an  absence for that day.

If the taxi runs but you assess conditions to be unsafe and keep your child off school this will be recorded as an authorised absence in most instances.
